Build Critical Aerospace Components with Precision

Thomson Lamination Company is looking for a highly skilled Senior Precision Grinder / Manual Machinist to join our growing aerospace manufacturing team.

For over 70 years, Thomson Lamination Company has manufactured precision rotor and stator laminations and assemblies for some of the world’s leading aerospace and industrial manufacturers. Our work supports applications where quality, precision, and reliability are essential.

This is a hands-on precision machining position focused on manual machining and precision grinding. While CNC experience is always welcome, this role is ideal for machinists who enjoy craftsmanship, problem-solving, and producing precision components—not simply operating production equipment.

This position is intended for an experienced machinist who enjoys challenging work, takes pride in craftsmanship, and is capable of producing precision components to extremely close tolerances with minimal supervision.

Job Description

  • Perform precision OD grinding, ID grinding, honing, milling, drilling, and tapping operations.
  • Machine aerospace components to customer drawings and exacting specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements.
  • Select tooling, grinding wheels, workholding methods, and machining processes appropriate for each application.
  • Set up, adjust, and optimize manual grinding equipment for maximum precision and efficiency.
  • Perform complete in-process and final dimensional inspections using calibrated measuring equipment.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Quality to ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Assist in mentoring and developing less experienced machinists.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality, throughput, and efficiency.

Qualifications Required

  • 8+ years of precision machining experience.
  • Extensive experience with OD and ID grinding.
  • Strong manual machining background including manual mills, lathes, drills, and honing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to machine and inspect precision components to extremely close tolerances.
  • Ability to independently set up jobs from engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment including:
    • Micrometers
    • Bore gauges
    • Dial indicators
    • Height gauges
    • Precision inspection equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred

  • Aerospace manufacturing experience.
  • Tool & Die Maker or Journeyman Machinist background.
  • Experience machining hardened tool steels and specialty alloys.
  • Experience manufacturing precision tooling or complex assemblies.

Why Thomson Lamination? / Benefits:

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience
  • Overtime opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Stable, family-owned company with more than 70 years of success
