Cutting-edge electric motor rotors and stators are made from stacks of thin metal layers that are assembled together. The layers are usually stamped from coils of steel with operations like blanking, forming, and notching. Using precision tooling is critical to producing accurate, repeatable stampings.
At Thomson Laminating Company we have a dedicated, in-house tool production shop where we design and manufacture the tooling used for our motor lamination stamping and fabrication processes. Learn more about our tool manufacturing capabilities and how that supports our motor lamination production operations for customers in many different industries.
Toolroom Capabilities and Equipment
Thomson Lamination Company provides fully integrated fabrication of precision tooling, laminations produced from specialty electrical steel alloys, annealing, and production of complete electric motor subassemblies. Our in-house toolroom is staffed by experienced toolmakers and machinists, and supports our fabrication and lamination operations. The different types of equipment we use for making tooling and small-batch laminations include:
- CNC turning and machining centers.
- Surface and jig grinding machines for achieving concentric ID/OD dimensions, roundness, and stack flatness.
- Wire EDM machines for creating features on tooling and small-batch orders or prototypes of laminate layers.
- Progressive die stamping compatible with our 250 ton presses and metal sheets from 0.0004 in. to 0.031 in. thick.
We’re committed to high-precision machining for precision stator and rotor tooling production, and we have invested in advanced equipment and processes that improve the quality of our tooling and stampings. Keeping tooling and lamination production in-house also reduces turnaround times and maintains consistency of quality.
Tooling Options for All Volumes of Production
Thomson Lamination Company has expertise in custom die fabrication for motors, and offer a few different tooling options depending on your requirements and the volume of your order. These options are designed to balance precision, cost, and production time and they include:
- Prototyping and short-run orders. We use notch tooling, laser cutting, and wire EDM cutting for producing small quantities of laminations.
- Mid-volume production. Orders of up to 200,000 items are produced through our cost-effective Master Die Insert Program.
- High-volume production. We also produce carbide progressive tooling for high-volume production up to 2+ million parts.
Our engineering team will learn the details of your lamination designs and production requirements to determine the best tooling and fabrication options.
